AGS Airports Ltd. is a prominent airport group responsible for the ownership and operation of three major airports in the United Kingdom: Aberdeen, Glasgow, and Southampton. With millions of passengers traveling through these airports annually, AGS Airports Ltd. is dedicated to ensuring a seamless and enjoyable travel experience for every customer. This commitment to excellence necessitates continuous investment in infrastructure and technology, allowing the company to stay ahead in the competitive aviation industry.

Challenge

In the face of rapidly evolving technological landscapes, AGS Airports recognised the need to modernise its IT infrastructure. Many components within their IT environment had reached the end of their vendor-supported life, posing a risk to operational efficiency and resilience. The company embarked on a mission to refresh their infrastructure to not only maintain but also elevate their service standards.

The primary objectives of this modernisation were twofold. Firstly, AGS Airports aimed to enhance the customer experience by leveraging advanced technologies to improve response times and operational efficiency. Secondly, the company aspired to become a more sustainable enterprise. By consolidating their data centre, AGS Airports sought to reduce power consumption and the associated cooling requirements, thereby minimising their environmental footprint.

To achieve these ambitious goals, AGS Airports required a robust, enterprise-class IT foundation capable of supporting future needs and ensuring higher resiliency across all locations. This case study explores the challenges faced by AGS Airports, the strategic solutions implemented to modernise their infrastructure, and the subsequent benefits realised in terms of operational resilience, customer satisfaction, and sustainability.

Proact Understood our needs and direction, working with the us to devise a cost-effective solution aligned to our goals

Solution

After establishing its own IT estate in 2014, AGS Airports found that while the majority of its infrastructure was still running satisfactorily, the need for additional storage and the impending end-of-life status of many components necessitated an urgent update. Without modernization, AGS risked a slowdown in key airport operations such as security screening, boarding card processing, baggage handling, and numerous back-office functions. These operations depend on automation, high-end imaging, and substantial network bandwidth—all critical elements that any new solution would need to address.

Proact’s solutions architects worked closely with AGS to align their solutions with the airport group’s business goals. Demonstrating unwavering commitment, Proact prioritized the success of the project over mere efficiency, setting them apart from other suppliers.

Proact implemented a Hyper-Converged Infrastructure (HCI) platform that combined software-defined compute, storage, and networking capabilities into a single, cohesive system. This integration provided AGS with enhanced flexibility, scalability, and cost savings while maintaining control and security. Additional cluster and switch implementations ensured fast, efficient storage and maintained the availability of critical workloads even in the event of hardware or software failures.

The result is a future-proof, fit-for-purpose solution that delivers tangible business benefits, increased performance, and reduced operating costs, all while supporting AGS’s journey towards a sustainable future. This highly available and secure IT infrastructure now robustly supports a wide range of AGS’s applications and services.

Benefits

  • Enhanced efficiency
Increased availability and performance capability led to improved response times for critical airport operations which affect passenger processing time.
  • Future-proof
The solution was designed from the ground up to be easily expandable should AGS require increased resources or need to meet new compliance requirements
  • Simplified administration
Because AGS outsources large portions of their IT operations, Proact implemented simplification of complex systems in its solution to ease onboarding and reduce administration.
  • Improved sustainability
The new solution’s improved efficiency enables AGS to reduce its datacentre footprint by reducing hardware as well as the power consumption and cooling associated with it
